XP audio was most of all designed with high efficiency in mind. It uses 16 bit integers but the moment the K-mixer kicked in, it resulted in audible distortion. From Vista on there is a new audio architecture. It uses floats for a better precision. It also introduces WASAPI, a low latency audio driver. This architecture is still in use today.
